Music & Performance
Lenora’s performances weave tradition with innovation, honoring jazz’s deep roots while embracing fresh interpretations. Whether on intimate club stages or in grand concert halls, she brings a presence that commands attention and invites connection.
Her repertoire spans the timeless standards of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, original compositions inspired by personal and global stories, and arrangements that flow seamlessly across genres. Each performance is a tide—sometimes gentle, sometimes powerful—always carrying the listener somewhere new. Audiences leave feeling as if they’ve been guided safely to shore, even when the journey took them into uncharted waters.
Tribe Jazz Orchestra® is a jazz orchestra led by Lenora with a unique approach to the music of the big band tradition. Featuring a diverse amalgam of the top men and women musicians in Jazz today, the instrumentation comprises a combination of jazz orchestra with a modern chamber ensemble perspective. The new recording, For The Love Of Big Band was released in March of 2020. This was Lenora’s seventh commercial release, and her first big band record to date after an eight-year hiatus taken from recording to finish a Doctor of Musical Arts degree.
The members of Tribe Jazz Orchestra®, pianist Ernest A. Turner, II, guitarist Baron Tymas, bassist Natalie Boeyink, drummer Thomas E. Taylor, Jr., tenor saxophonist/spoken word artist, Salome Serena Wiley Bey, soprano/alto saxophonist/flutist Dexter Moses, trumpeter Al Strong, trombonist Robert Trowers and cellist Timothy Holley, have performed together in various configurations and have appeared in noted concert halls and international music festivals in The United States, Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. The musicians have each garnered an international audience of followers as well as critical and professional acclaim over the last few decades.
The Sistering captures the pure magic that unfolds when four accomplished jazz artists come together to uplift and inspire one another—on and off the stage. This in-the-making collection features eleven powerful compositions: two penned by each artist, two co-written, and one imaginative reworking of a beloved jazz standard. Though still in progress, the music already reveals a beautifully interconnected journey through themes of family, love, loss, and badassery—rendering the project both a memoir and a cultural mirror.
Infused with soul, folk, funk, and spoken word, The Sistering ventures across wide musical terrain, with improvisation at its heart. Song titles like “Combat Boots and Glass Slippers” by Lenora, “Circle” by Kate McGarry, “Follow the Stream” by Lois Deloatch, and “A Brother Just Like You” by Nnenna Freelon, hint at the emotional depth and narrative spirit behind the music. As it continues to take shape, the project stands as a vibrant testament to the power of creative alliance—and it needs the support of those who love (and will come to love) the group and their music to be fully realized.
