RESIDENCY NARRATIVE & OVERVIEW
The primary goals to achieve through this residency:
In Journeywoman: Mentoring the Next Jazz Generation, emerging artists and jazz students are partnered with jazz musician/educators who provide training, mentorship and professional development over an academic year. Lenora and a subset of her band, Tribe Jazz Orchestra, perform and compose with students from the College of Music/Jazz Studies at MSU, through several virtual workshops and an in-person week-long residency.
A primary goal of the residency is to train participants to identify gaps in intercultural maturity (knowing how to engage with different others) to work, thrive and sustain arts careers. Over the 40+ years of Lenora's career she has developed teaching artists residencies for large corporate and government funders, including an online certificate program in teaching artistry at her home institution.
To this residency with MSU she shares this knowledge and curricula to guide the participants in learning how to articulate and build a stream of income as teaching artists, a very lucrative field, but underrepresented by BIPOC artists. A vehicle for inculcating intercultural maturity, another goal of workshop is to idenitify themes about inclusivity of women artists and women's contributions in Jazz to develop an idea from concept-to-concert.
The participants will develop compositions, under the guidance of Lenora and The Tribe Jazz Orchestra, using her work, Journeywoman as a template, and culminating in a performance, a documentation audio and/or visual recording, and a community event.

Bay Area Music Project (BAMP) was founded by Lorrie Murray in 2014 to provide high-quality and empowering after-school music education for Alameda’s socio-economically and culturally diverse community. Inspired by Venezuela’s renowned El Sistema program and its dedication to artistically rigorous ensemble training as a vehicle for social change, BAMP’s mission is to provide an opportunity where all children—regardless of circumstances—can thrive socially and academically through music education that promotes creative expression, teamwork, discipline, and social responsibility.

The Western Regional Practicum is designed to convene Teaching Artists from El Sistema-inspired and community music programs across the West Coast, including Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington. Over two full days in-person, participants gain new skills and tools that directly support the continued growth of their teaching practice as they hear from expert clinicians, reflect together through collaborative conversations, observe teaching artistry in real-time, and build a network of peer Teaching Artists.

A longtime supporter of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jack Rudin and his beloved wife Susan have been steadfast in their commitment to jazz and Jazz at Lincoln Center's mission. The Rudins understood very early on the value and importance of educating youth about this important American art form—jazz. Jack was all about education for young people, particularly those who were disadvantaged. In 2012, the Rudins generously endowed Jazz at Lincoln Center’s national Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program, the first of our programs to be endowed.
Jazz at Lincoln Center serves the largest jazz education program network in the world, and its initiatives are based on the organization’s 35-year history of education in jazz performance and appreciation. Goals of each program are for students to gain insight into American vernacular music and jazz, learn the communal history of jazz in a sociopolitical context, receive guidance on how to better communicate personal objectives, and gain awareness of the mission of jazz musicians today building on the aspirations laid by earlier generations.
